Zengo B Jap., lit. “gradual enlightenment”; the teaching of gradual enlightenment (also referred to as “step-by-step” or “stage-by-stage”) associated with the Northern school ofCh’an (Zen) in China, as opposed to the teaching of sudden enlightenment (tongo), which characterizes the Southern school (Zen).
