The Vedāngas belong to the body of Hindu scriptures called smriti. Mainly composed in Sūtra prose style, the Vedāngas are like textbooks that cover the six Vedic auxiliary sciences:
1) phonetics (shikshā);
2) prosody (chandas);
3) grammar (vyākarana);
4) etymology (nirukta), with an especially famous work of the same name by Yāska;
5) astronomy (jyotisha);
6) sacrificial rites (kalpa-sūtra).
