Sūtra-pitaka (Sūtra-pitaka), Skt. (Pali, Sutta-pitaka); lit. “Basket of Writings”; a part of the Buddhist canon (Tripitaka). According to tradition the sūtra-pitaka contains the discourses of the historical Buddha Shākyamuni (sūtra). The sūtra-pitaka is preserved in a Sanskrit version composed of four collections (Āgama). In the Pali recension, which is the only one to have been completely preserved, it is composed of five collections (Nikāya).
