SĀNKHYA (Sāṃkhya) Skt., one of the six orthodox doctrines of philosophy (darshana) of Hinduism. Founded by Kapila, it teaches that the universe arises through the union of prakriti (nature) with purusha (consciousness). According to Sānkhya, there are as many souls and units of consciousness (purushas) as there are living beings. Concerning its evolutionary theory, parināmavāda.
