PŪRVA-MĪMĀMSĀ (Pūrva-Mīmāṃsā), Skt., lit. pūrva: “earlier,” mīmāmsā: “investigation”; one of the six darshanas, dealing with the subject matter of ritual. It preceeds the Uttara-Mīmāmsā, not only chronologically but in an even more important sense: the purifying action of ritual serves as preparation for the attainment of knowledge (the content of Uttara-Mīmāmsā; see also Mīmāmsā). The sage Jaimini is regarded as the founder of Pūrva-Mīmāmsā.
