P’o Chin.; body soul, one of two types of soul that, according to Chinese belief, inhabit every human being. The other is the so-called breath, or spirit, soul (hun).
Every human being has seven p’o souls, which owe their existence to the passive yin energy (yin-yang) and regulate the lower body functions. They cling to the human body; if they depart from it, death ensues. In that case the p’o souls rejoin the Earth, which is pure yin.
