Ōryō school (Chin., Huang-lung-p’ai, Jap., Ōryō-ha [Chin., p’ai; Jap., ha, “wing”]); a lineage of Rinzai Zen stemming from the Chinese Ch’an (Zen) master Huang-lung Hui-nan (Jap., Ōryō or Ōryū E’nan). It belongs to the “seven schools” (goke-shichishū) of Ch’an (Zen) and was the first school of Zen in Japan, brought there by Eisai Zenj i. It died out both in China and Japan after a few generations. Since the Ōryō lineage developed out of the Rinzai school, it is also called the Rinzai Ōryō school.
