NYĀYA-SŪTRA Skt.; the chief work of Gotama, founder of the Nyāya philosophy. It is estimated to have been written in the third/ fourth century B.C.E. The principles of Nyāya existed prior to Gotama’s time in undifferentiated form. This sūtra, divided into five books, each of which contains two subsections, attempts to reconcile the conclusions arrived at by the brahmans (brāhmana) as a result of logical thinking with their religious and philosophical dogmas. In the third century, Vātsyāyana composed a commentary on the work (Nyāya-Bhāshya), that is still regarded as standard today.
