Nirodha Skt., lit. “destruction, dissolution. “
[Hinduism] A state of intense concentration, in which the distinction between subject and object ceases (is “annihilated”), so that the mind comes to rest and is conquered.
[Buddhism ] Nirodha is interpreted in various ways: as the dissolution of suffering in the sense of the third of the four noble truths; as the elimination of the passions, which are the cause of suffering; and as the ending of rebirth and mortal existence, of feelings and perceptions. Nirodha is often equated with nirvāna. The notion stresses the active elimination of the causes of renewed rebirth (Nirodha-samāpatti).
