The term “macehual” or “macehualli” could be initially translated as an ordinary man, a vassal, or a commoner. However, when this ordinary man was initiated into the teachings of Quetzalcoatl, a path of effort and self-sacrifice began, ultimately transforming him into a “liberated by merit.” Hence the term “Macehualisticayotl,” merit; an achievement attained as a result of progressive emancipation from the bonds imposed by Mayahuel, the intoxicating one, the goddess of sensory-induced intoxication.
The path of progress for the macehual transformed him, over time, into a Teohua, deified. The path to becoming a Teohua was precisely to follow the teachings of the Plumed Serpent and emulate the life model passed down by the messengers of Quetzalcoatl. These teachings culminated in a supreme state called Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli, the one who becomes the dwelling of light (Lord of the House of Dawn). In other words, the one in whom the light resides, a state in which any sense of separation between the human being and divinity fades away, merging and becoming the very consciousness of the Plumed Serpent or the Absolute.
