Mahāmaudgalyāyana Skt. (Pali, Mahāmoggalana ); short form, Maudgalyāyana (Moggalana); one of the most important disciples of the Buddha Shākyamuni. Mahāmaudgalyāyana, who came from a Brahman family, entered the Buddhist community together with the friend of his youth, Shāriputra, and soon became famous for his supernatural abilities (clairvoyance and magic). The images of Mahāmaudgalyāyana and Shāriputra are often found in Buddhist monasteries next to that of the Buddha. Both were murdered shortly before the death of the Buddha by enemies of Buddhism. Mahāmaudgalyāyana is one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha.
