Special tradition outside the teaching

Kyōge-betsuden B Jap., lit. “special tradition outside the [orthodox] teaching”; the transmis­sion of the buddha-dharma from heart-mind to heart-mind (ishin-denshin) in the tradition of Zen, which is not to be confused with the transmission of the teaching of Buddha through sacred scriptures. (Also fukasetsu).
