Kokoro Jap. (Sino-Jap., shin) Japanese way of reading the Chinese character hsin, which can be translated by “heart, spirit, consciousness, soul, mind, outlook, sense, interiority, thought, ” and so on. In Zen it means, depending on the context, either the mind of a person in the sense of all his powers of consciousness, mind, heart, and spirit, or else absolute reality the mind beyond the distinction between mind and matter (busshō), self-nature, or true nature.
