TOLTEQUITY

What is Toltecáyotl?

In ancient Mexico, an extraordinary culture with a profound social and spiritual proposal developed for millennia, giving life and sustenance to all the great civilizations of Anahuac, from the Olmecs in the 2nd millennium BC to the Aztecs in 1500 AD. This great culture can be divided into two parts: a social proposal for good living and harmonious coexistence among its members, and a spiritual proposal for each individual in that society to attain spiritual transcendence in their life. This social and spiritual proposal was called Toltecáyotl or toltequidad by its creators. The word Toltecáyotl is a Nahuatl word derived from the root “Tol,” meaning “stem,” which eventually came to mean culture.

The word “tolteca” comes from the Nahuatl word “toltecatl,” which originally referred to the inhabitants of the so-called Tollan but later, during the Mexica era, became synonymous with craftsman or artist. Therefore, the term “tolteca” can be used interchangeably as a synonym for cultured or artist. In fact, the first Nahuatl dictionary, written in the mid-16th century by Father Molina, translates Toltecáyotl as “art of living.” For this reason, more than an ethnicity, “tolteca” was a degree of knowledge held by the wise men of ancient Mexico, and Toltecáyotl encompassed the social, scientific, artistic, and spiritual achievements accumulated for millennia by the peoples of Anahuac.
